The Sydney Students Food Co-operative was founded in 1998 by students
wishing to create a space where they could promote sustainable food
choices.
Registered as a club with the Sydney University Union, the Food
Co-operative moved into a small space on level 4 of the Wentworth
building where it still operates from today.
The USYD Food Co-op has grown exponentially within the last three
years both in terms of members and customers. This reflects current
trends in sustainability, organic food production, waste reduction
and a growing awareness of the threat of climate change. In 2007,
the Co-op was threatened with closure when they were asked to vacate
their premises with no suitable space to which the co-op could relocate.
Fortunately, due to a highly successful campaign run at Sydney University
including awareness stalls, lecture speakers and a petition with
over 600 signatures the food co-op appealed to both Sydney University
and the USU to keep the space and were successful.
In 2008, the food co-op hopes to revitalise its core member base
and continue to grow as the only on-campus provider of sustainable,
organic, packaging free, fair trade, vegan food available on campus.
