Many befuddled students wander into the co-op, gaze around in confusion at the barrels and jars on the shelves and ask, "What do you sell?" Basically, we sell food, but it's also much more than that. So why should you shop at the food co-op?

1. For the Environment

Food which is organic has been grown without the use of artificial pesticides or herbicides, which run into waterways and disrupt the natural ecosystem.
Because we buy food in bulk there is less packaging, and that means less plastic going to landfill. We also encourage customers to bring their own packaging, and we try to use biodegradable forms where possible. We buy as local as possible, which helps to reduce carbon emissions from transporting food long distances in planes and trucks.

2. For the Community

Wherever possible we buy Australian made food and products, so by shopping at the co-op you are supporting your local producers instead of exploitative, large, profit-driven companies. If we must buy from overseas, we buy FairTrade if possible, which ensures producers in less developed countries get a fair price for what they grow.

3. For Yourself

The food co-op is simply the most affordable place to buy organic food, which you will find if you compare our prices with organic stores. This is because we order in bulk, directly from wholesalers, and have low mark-ups because the food co-op is non-profit. Also, the price is the same even if you only buy a small amount, so you don't have to always buy the biggest packet for the best value. Having said that though, if you want to order really big amounts, you can place a bulk order through us which lowers the price even further.

Organic food is better for your health and tastes great too! It contains no chemicals or artificial anything and is simple pure food the natural way. In comparison, non-organic foods can contain more than 500 food additives!

And nothing beats that feeling you get inside from knowing you are buying ethical food and doing a positive thing to help yourself, others and the environment.
